If you’ve ever said, “I’m just not photogenic,” you’re not alone.
So many of our clients here in Honolulu walk into their headshot session feeling a little nervous. Maybe you avoid cameras altogether, or maybe you’ve had one too many awkward photos haunting you.
But here’s the truth: looking natural in your headshot has very little to do with being “photogenic” and everything to do with how comfortable you feel in the moment.
The good news? Comfort can be coached believe it or not —and that’s exactly what we do. Here’s our short list of headshot posing tips to help you build your camera confidence and pose naturally for headshots:
1. Forget the Word “Pose”
The word pose can make people freeze up. Instead, think of it as adjusting your posture.
We’ll guide you into a stance that feels good for your body, then tweak small things like shoulder angle, chin position, and hand placement so you still look like yourself—just at your best.
2. Stand (or Sit) Like You Mean It
Confidence shows in your posture.
- Shoulders back and relaxed – Avoid tensing or hunching forward.
- Weight slightly shifted – Whether you’re seated or standing, a small weight shift can make your stance more dynamic.
- Feet planted naturally – Stability in your base keeps your upper body relaxed.
3. The Magic of Micro-Movements
Tiny adjustments make a huge difference on camera. We might have you:
- Turn your head just a couple of degrees.
- Drop your chin slightly.
- Lean subtly toward the camera (yes, it feels weird, but it looks great). These small shifts avoid stiffness and help create a natural connection with the lens.
4. Relax Your Face
It’s common to “lock” your expression when you know you’re being photographed. To keep your face looking relaxed:
- Take a slow breath before each click.
- Think of something or someone that makes you smile—not a forced grin, but a genuine one.
- If smiling feels unnatural, try a soft, closed-mouth expression. It can look confident and approachable without being overly “cheesy.”
5. Let Us Do the Heavy Lifting
When you’re in our studio, you don’t need to know what to do with your hands, where to look, or how to angle your head. That’s our job. We guide you moment-by-moment so you can stop worrying about how you look and just focus on being yourself.
